This may be the most beautiful video game theme ever written. And I've never even played FFVII. But yet, this piece speaks to me.
I don't arrange much music outside of NES. The reason the arrangement came to be is I was asked to arrange this song for the Black Materia: Remake by Mega Ran and Game Chops. It ended up being used on the last track on that album - Epilogue.
That version was recorded on a different piano, and the process of trying to record this song on my previous piano was the catalyst to finally make the move to upgrade to a new one. I just couldn't make the music sound the way it deserved to be played. A few months later, I upgraded to a 2020 Boston GP 193 PE-11 (which is what you see here) and this piece is one of the main reasons why.
This arrangement is slightly inspired from the Piano Collections version. I'd only heard the first half of that version and purposely did not listen to the rest as I wanted to be free to come up with new ideas. Unlike my NES arrangements, I didn't go for note-for-note accuracy from the original OST but rather took more liberties with the arrangements with the goal of emphasizing the beauty of the melody and original composition as can be expressed with the piano.
